8/15 補救教學研習 [英文]

This workshop is hosted by Joe Lee, the DJ of Magic English (FM 101.7).
He's super amazing, funny, and such a hyper.

Basically his materials are all about activities and teaching methods with real examples.
The followings will be my notes on this workshop. Hopefully, we can lighten up our English classes, with passion, with games, with laughter. After all, learning should be a happy journey.

1. Jokes: Ahajokes

2. Tongue twisters: you can find lots of them online.

3. Songs
Projects: ask students to translate songs/ nursery rhymes (Chinese, Taiwanese) into English.

Karaoke Party: make groups of students practice one song and hold a contest.

Songs to teach
   1. Do you hear the people sing, singing the song of angry men? (sense verbs)
   2. The Mom Song (Imperative)
   3. Mommy's Kissing Santa Claus (sense verbs)
   4. Friday (Days of the week)
   5. Grandma got run over by a reindeer (passive voice)

4. Vocabulary Teaching:
+ Free Rice

+ Spelling Bee: students stand in front of the classroom and listen to the teacher read the words. Students will raise their hands and spell the word and say the meaning.

+ Crazy ABC: one student stand in front of the class and "describe" a word for the class to guess.
real examples (low achievers):
1. (sneeze) morning. Which word is missing?
A: Good.
2. Girl, girl, girl. Fly, fly. Bird, bird. Help! Ya!
A: Superwoman.

+ Word chain: say a word with the last letter. Count down when the students are coming up with answers. It's more exciting.

+ Fly swatter: write down words on blackboard or use flashcards. Ask 2 students to compete hitting the word the teacher reads.

+ Flashcards: show the pictures first and then the spellings.

+ Creating a story: give students the first sentence of the story. 4 in a group. Ask students to pick 4 words to make 4 sentences to complete a story. Everyone has to memorize the story before they leave.

+ Memory game: stick cards with pictures and words covered on the blackboard. Ask students to come up and flip the cards. The goal is to match pictures with the right words.

+ TA rotation: pick better achievers in class to be your TA. Each TA is responsible for 2 words. They have to prepare for the pronunciation, word usage, and a sentence. TAs will teach the whole class their words by rotating around the groups. The teacher's job is to close up, recycle and conduct a quick verbal evaluation.

5. Grammar Teaching:
+ Timeline

+ 3Ps:
Grammar focus: so...that...

  • Presentation:

1. start with simple examples.
2. ask students to look for overlapped parts.

  • Practice:

3. ask students to finish a sentence and write on the blackboard. "Jeremy Lin is so       adj     . "
4. ask students to make sentence "that...S + V."
5. ask them to share their completed sentences with their partners.
6. read the sentences to the teacher.

  • Production:

7. give students worksheet. Ask students to draw a picture and make a sentence. The difficulty should be gradually increased.
8. make an art exhibition. Share with the class.

+ Charade:
Grammar focus: sense verbs + Ving
4 students stand in the front, each acts a word in "Joe saw Kim singing." Another student has to guess the sentence.

+ Whisper:
Grammar focus: I know that S+V
The teacher whispers a sentence to a student, and then they whisper one by one to the last person, who has to make a guess.

+ Sentence Completion (Heartbreaking Experience):
Grammar Focus: so...that...
Draw a heart on the blackboard. 4 as a group. Ask 2 students to make "so..." and the others "that..." without seeing each other's. If the pair makes sense, the group gets a point.

+ Past tense: start with regular verbs.

Other tips:
1. You're the host of the class. You create the atmosphere.

2. Keep students busy! So they won't fall asleep.

3. Every 8-10 mins you need a new activity.

4. Watch more TV programs! Get ideas from them!

5. Listen to more songs!

6. Give compliments.

7. Use different classrooms, eg. computer lab, library, etc.

8. Junior high school students should know 1200 words, recognize 2000 words. But low achievers: 864 words.

After this workshop, I'm really inspired to make my small class a communicative-based one. And I feel much more encouraged, cuz someone is really doing this in Taiwan, with PE talented students, and most importantly, it works wonder!!!
